Pre-Production

This week my digital storytelling class and I were split into two groups with the goal of creating two different short films. I’m fairly certain that the script my group will be shooting is my friend’s horror/psychological thriller script, “The Red Singer.” My script probably would have been tricky to film given that it requires extras and some practical effects, and it also takes place outside for some of the plot. I adapted one of the stories from Emily Carroll’s Through the Woods, which I highly recommend.

I voted for “The Red Singer” because it has a very spooky plot, as well as a lot of color symbolism, which I’m a sucker for. My friend is also well-prepared in that they have an idea of the actors they want to use when we’re shooting (their roommates).

I’m going to be the producer and the assistant director, which means I’ll be in charge of visual editing and keeping everyone organized, especially during the shoot. I think I’ll be good at editing because I’ve already used iMovie before, which I think is what we’ll be using to edit the film. The whole assistant director thing I’m not too sure about because it seems like a lot of running around and wrangling people, and I don’t want to micromanage anyone.

The only challenge this script poses is its inclusion of a stage for a few of the scenes. I recommend using the black box theater, but it might be tricky to find a good time to film there.
