Sound & Story

Connecting back to my post about the disconnected footage I took and cut together: this week I was tasked with adding sound. I decided to use two mildly moody songs for my video to give it a contemplative feel. I was considering using “The Gambler” by Fun., which is domestic bliss in a song, owing to the fact that Cooper the therapy labradoodle made an early appearance in my footage. The happy song seemed to fit him. However, I didn’t want this video to just be a happy-go-lucky one, so I chose “Three Minutes for a Detuned Diorama” by Squalloscope as my first song. I had that fade into “Cough It Out” by The Front Bottoms, one of my favorites. I tried to make my cuts to the beat of the two songs. Lastly, I added fades and a rain effect to some outdoor parts of my footage.

I think that adding music to my footage gave it a completely different tone and mood. The introspective song ties all of the clips together nicely and highlights the comfortable isolation of the footage– I was walking around alone when filming most of the clips, after all.
